purdue open and the best D i ever got

went to the purdue open weekend before last (oops didn't post last week)
i was contacted by will asking if i could bring amanda up to the tournament from iu since i was passing that way, so i talked to her and made arrangements and we headed up friday night
we got there and i had some love shack for dinner and hung out in john's room for awhile (he and his roomie were gone) and then headed to help set up for the open
when we finished that we went to BrewCo, and because i was a bad fencer (non-social) when i was at purdue it was my first time there
i tried a beer (still holding out hope that they don't ALL suck) and it was actually pretty ok so i bought a 'growler' of it and their root beer (very good)
saturday i went to the open and fenced epee and didn't do as well as i should have but still not terrible and then got changed over for saber (after helping round up 4 more people so it would be a D1 instead of an E1) and did my pools
i won all my bouts (though my indicator wasn't great) and that was enough to kick me to the number 1 seed (WOOOO!) because the D and other Es in the second pool all had one loss
so i ended up with a bye for the first round (which is frustrating because i'm there to fence and the more fencing the better, but being in first helped keep me happy)
steve took out the E from my pool (who had caused me a little trouble but not too much) and nads (who i fenced with at purdue and while i consistently did better than him then, he has improved and i was kinda worried about facing him) took out the D in the second round, then steve and i fenced and he was good, but he was too much of a foilist, so he would make wonderful parries and then start a long prep action and i'd hit him and get the touch (he could really do a lot of damage in sabre being able to parry like that if he would turn around and immediately riposte) and that was enough to land me in the final bout... against nads...
we spent most of the time flying at each other (like good sabeurs) so there are a couple pics of us in contact right after touches
but after a very hard fought bout i was able to beat him, winning the event and earning a D07
yay!
so then i went and picked up nick (who was moving all his stuff from dayton) and dropped him off at his car and we went to steak and shake and then back to get showers
feeling much refreshed we strolled down to windows (mmmm) for some wonderful martinis, and even though neither joe nor ryann were there renu was and did wonderfully
after that we swung by harry's and then off to bed
sunday i hung out for awhile, went to the griffin grapple for a bit, harassed people, went to nine irish brothers (down on the levee, had fish and chips, pretty tasty...) and then drove back home dropping amanda off on the way (someone has informed me that all these times where i'm driving women around only to deliver them to other men is jsut building up karma for me.... we'll see)

lcf second session and the hot carls

so tuesday i had the first meeting of the second session of the fencing club..
unfortunately that coincided with a large amount of snowfall, causing problems with attendance, so i only had one person
i went ahead and had the saturday practice that i had planned on and had two people show up, but also had someone call during the week saying they would be there next tuesday and two other people say they couldn't make it until tuesday, so i should have 5, which would work well
i went to bloomington for practice thursday and got to fence a lot of sabre which was really nice, though i might have beaten on the wrists of a couple people pretty viciously, and someone (mary.....................) hit my mask JSUT right and popped off one of the rivets so i had to take it in to work today and put in another one (yay having access to tools)
and now for the highlight of the week!
a couple guys i know from summer camp (jonas i worked with and matt was in my shotgun class) are in a band called 'the hot carls'
anyone in the know would understand why the dj i mentioned them to thought they might want to change the name for marketing purposes
they play folk music (which i happen to be a big fan of) and are actually really good
they put on a really fun show and i'm curious what kind of quality they're going to get out of the cd they're working on
definitely going to have to see them play again

lookin sharp and why people drink during the super bowl

hanging out in lexington again this weekend and while i was down there we went to dillard's
well they were having a 50% off sale, AND THEN they were taking an additional 40% off of select things
my ears perked up when i heard that and i immediately went down to look at suits and after much sifting through i found a really nice suit that is listed for 500$ but i got it for 150
woo!
and i got a Great tie to go with it too, so i was pretty happy with the whole thing
then we went to 'the pub' and ate and i tried a beer sampler (i know, it surprised me too) and found a beer that i wasn't completely disgusted by (talk about being surprised....)
sunday i went home and watched the super bowl (for the game even... it's almost like i'm channeling a real male or something) and came to a realization...
the reason overweight men always drink during the superbowl is they need the alcohol to thin their blood enough that they don't have a heart attack
so remember, beer can save your life
